Predictions are often tied to the new year but time is a construct and we can shake our crystal ball whenever the spirit moves us.

Below are four big swings that I have my eyes on in the coming years. For some of these, the green shoots are already here in the room with us. And in other cases, the data and anecdotes would suggest the shifts are still lurking in the distance, waiting to be propelled forward by human or technological tailwinds.

Whether any of these take five or ten years to come to fruition is anyone’s guess. I’m a futurist, not a betting woman.

  1. A large share of white collar workers will have a portfolio career

Last year, I wrote about the rise of the portfolio career, whereby workers have multiple jobs and multiple non-passive sources of income.

It goes without saying that side gigs are not a new concept, but this space has been ripe for a rebrand. In the same way that companies and even people reinvent themselves over time, old concepts often need, or are worthy of, a new wrapper. Because if executed and presented well, compelling branding can lend credence and credibility. And if done exceptionally well, compelling branding can help people feel less alone.

Blue collar workers have juggled multiple jobs and side sigs for a very long time but the trend is going upmarket and will begin even younger. It is no longer safe to put all your eggs in a single company basket, as businesses of all shapes and sizes will continue to do more with less (people are expendable and EBITDA is king). This will put more downward pressure on white collar workers to have a financial backup plan or two.

Building and nurturing a portfolio career is the future of work and the future of making a living. Eventually, a portfolio career may be something that people aspire to cultivate.

  1. Cybersecurity will be hot and will have a $1tn company in the Magnificent 7
